| The current investigation has been carried out considering the simplicity in placement and cost benefits of replacing MgO-C brick by carbon containing castables in slag line of steel ladles. The replacement of brick by castables demands the similar or even superior properties for carbon based castables than existing MgO-C bricks in terms of corrosion, penetration and oxidation resistance with excellent thermo mechanical properties. This work is a continuation of CIREP's long time project on carbon containing castables and the evaluation of such material for corrosion, oxidation and other properties have been successfully completed with positive conclusions. The improvement of thermo-mechanical properties, especially the work of fracture is another area to be filled out with the present investigation. Reinforcing castables with steel fibres for intermediate temperature application is one of the viable solutions to improve the thereto-mechanical properties and is the core objective for the present work.
