Abstract/Summary:
Clay acid leaching for producing alumna is an alternative to the traditional Bayer process using bauxite. The work presented in this thesis deals with the application of acidic leaching of alumna carriers. Several roasting and leaching tests were conducted and measurements were collected in order to have redundant data. Redundant data is used to illustrate the problem of measurement errors often neglected in hydrometallurgy. Processing of the data has required the development of a data reconciliation algorithm. The algorithm was used to process results from roasting and leaching tests allowing the estimation of reliable performance indices. Analysis of the reconciled data provides key information concerning clay processing options. The process that yielded the most acceptable results with clay from the Murdochville area was applied to other alumna carriers. Reconciled results show that an acceptable process for a given alumina carrier may not be applicable to other alumina carriers.
