Abstract/Summary:
As a promising approach for solving industrial pollution problems and for encouraging sustainable development, Pollution Prevention (P2) has been promoted in Canada since the early 1990s. In 1997, Environment Canada linked P2 with the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI).; This study focuses on the implementation and reporting of P2 in the selected industries in the Atlantic Provinces. In particular, the study includes an analysis of P2 performance, barriers and opportunities based on the P2 data in the NPRI and additional information gathered from the reporting facilities.; The study documents a general increase of P2 reporting between 2000 and 2002. Good operating practice or training was the predominantly used P2 technique. While P2 practices during 2000 to 2002 generally reflect the best available P2 technologies in the Atlantic Provinces, further opportunities do exist.; A lack of quantitative data and a lack of monitoring of the on-going P2 implementation are the main limitations in the current NPRI P2 reporting system.; On the basis of the results, it is recommended that providing additional P2 assistance and training programs would increase the progress of P2 implementation.
