Abstract/Summary:
The main objective of this project is to develop an expertise in the field of plastic laser welding for industrial applications. The concept is to create a bond between two plastic parts with an optical-based heating. The main interests are the high quality joints and the diversity of potential applications.; The goal is to master the various involved parameters, like the laser type, the energy needed, the beam conditioning, the study of the appropriate polymers for the process, the analyze of parts design and geometry to obtain a optimized and tough welding.; The expected results are promising because of the advantages provided by this technology when compared to other techniques. First of all, the joint will be strong, free from contaminant, hermetic, aesthetic and uniform. The process can be automated, resulting in a fine seam, a fast welding and that can be done repeatedly. Moreover, the study results could apply to micro-welding as well to massive production. This research opens new horizons, and pushes back the limits of conventional welding processes.
