Abstract/Summary:
Due to increasing stricter norms for wastewater treatment plants and increasing populations, many municipalities are faced with problems of producing effluents which are incapable of respecting both their environmental objectives and the established norms. Sainte-Julie, a town in Quebec, whose wastewater is treated by facultative aerobic lagoons, is one of these municipalities faced with such a problem. Presently, during the winter season their effluent has a BOD5 higher than their environmental objective and a higher yearly ammonia concentration level than that recommended by Environment Canada.; The moving bed biofilm reactor technology of AnoxKaldnes has been widely studied and is known to be efficient, in many cases, in the removal of organic matter and ammonia. However, combining the moving bed biofilm reactor and facultative aerobic lagoon has never been studied. The first aim of this research was to verify the possibility of increasing the BOD5 treatment capacity of a facultative aerobic lagoon plant in cold water conditions. The second goal was to evaluate the ammonia removal capacity using biological nitrification by combining the two technologies. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
