| Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells against the effects of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Imbalance between antioxidants and ROS may results in various health hazards. Antioxidant activity has been crucial in the treatment of many diseases like cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. The main aim of this research is to synthesize and develop more efficient sulfur and selenium antioxidants compared to the currently existing sulfur and selenium antioxidants. By incorporating silicon atom into organo sulfur or organo selenium compounds at β position will enhance the potency of these compounds by reducing the redox potential. Synthesis of new sulfur and selenium antioxidants with silicon atom at beta position was successful and these compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Target compounds were examined for their antioxidant activity by using different techniques. |
