Abstract/Summary:
Research has indicated that leadership is critical in the public service, especially during times of change. Given the ongoing changes that governments face, the purpose of this research was to determine how to develop conscious leadership within the Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance (MEIA). Using qualitative action research, the study explored how MEIA supervisors demonstrate conscious leadership to better understand how to develop it further. The study's conclusions indicate that there is value in developing conscious leadership, which will help to develop trust in MEIA and results in more engaged, effective employees. The recommendations include continuing with practices that currently contribute to the development of conscious leadership, providing coaching and training in how to coach to MEIA's supervisors and managers, and conducting dialogue sessions on conscious leadership with staff. Senior leaders need to model conscious leadership to create a culture in which its practice becomes the norm.
