Abstract/Summary:
The majority of Uganda's population lives in and/or depends on small urban centers for their social and economic necessities. These small urban centers create rural-urban linkages, helping small town dwellers and rural communities benefit from each other economically and socially. However, international and national policies tend to favor larger cities with public investments over such small and intermediate-sized urban centers. This thesis examines the social and economic development roles played by Uganda's numerous small urban centers and whether investments in these centers holds potential to contribute to the eventual sustainable and more equitable development of larger portions of the country.
