Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the collaborative decision-making model utilized within the Blood Utilization Program (BUP) in the Pre Admission Clinic at Vancouver Acute. The physicians and nurses that work within this program recommend treatment for pre-operative patients so as to reduce the patient's risk for receiving blood products. Collaborative decision-making between physicians and nurses is identified in the literature as a key component in the delivery of safe and effective patient care as well as instrumental in providing healthcare professionals with a satisfying work environment. This qualitative action research project identified respectful, time sensitive, face to face communication a clear understanding of roles, responsibilities and accountability and knowledge sharing as essential contributors to the establishment of collaborative relationships. The strategies recommended to the organization focused on applying these key elements of collaboration throughout Vancouver Acute allowing the organization to further develop a culture of collaboration and successfully implement transformational change.
