Abstract/Summary:
This study seeks to analyze PPStream's effectiveness against security violations. To achieve this end, the PPStream protocol was first reverse engineered. Then, security issues, such as privacy, exploits, and denial of service attacks, were tested against PPStream and the results were evaluated. These tests find that PPStream is unable to protect the privacy of its users and its data. Also, the tests show that a PPStream peer can decrease its upload rate, by operating behind a router or by limiting its own upload rates, without negatively affecting its download rate. Finally, PPStream is found to be fairly robust against denial of service attacks that target the channel discovery, peer registration, and peer discovery protocols.
