Abstract/Summary:
Broadband antennas are used in radars that study the frequency dependent behavior of layers of ice sheets. Antennas used so far have had inherent disadvantages like large size and non-planar structure. There was a need to develop compact planar antennas that have broad bandwidth and could be used with ground based and airborne radars. Reducing the dimension of the antenna element would allow us to incorporate more number of elements and use effective beamforming techniques. In this thesis we present a 4-element, compact, planar and wideband teardrop antenna array to be used with synthetic aperture radar. The operating frequency of the array is from 100 MHz-300 MHz.
