Abstract/Summary:
This thesis explores the motivations and theories at work in the exhibition New Values: Everyday Objects into Art Objects. The exhibition displays the practice of two regional artists who use commonplace objects and consumer goods in order to communicate ideas about our relationship to the material culture. The following document intends to provide a closer reading of the artworks and the concepts that are contained in the show. This essay is divided into three sections, each revealing a separate theme in contemporary art. The first section examines the influence of the archive and the role of creating a typology in contemporary art practice. The second section is dedicated to exploring how the two artists offer the viewer a sensory experience. The third part details how both artists are inspired to produce works that are focused on community and cooperation. Artists and artworks from which the ideas in the exhibition are derived have been acknowledged and explicated on in each chapter. The three separate themes are analyzed according to how they have been individually applied by the two artists featured in the show.
