Abstract/Summary:
Dielectric resonator antennas have been targeted in the past two decades as a potential solution for wideband antennas. Although they provide larger band and smaller size than patch antennas, their performances in circular polarization is still limited. The proposed research investigates methods to produce circular polarization using dielectric resonator antennas, and proposes a novel design for a hybrid dielectric resonator antenna for circular polarization over a wideband. Two geometries of the design were investigated and fabricated, both of which showed impedance matching over 50%, from 1.09 GHz to 1.82 GHz, frequencies at which global navigation satellite systems operate. The radiation characteristics of the antennas were also investigated from 1.125 GHz to 1.625 GHz. The gain is over 1.5 dBic and the axial ratio is under 1.5 dB in the boresight axis over the entire frequency band investigated. The half-power beamwidth is over 70°, and the AR < 3 dB beamwidth is over 100° over the frequencies investigated for radiation characteristics. The antennas show a front-to-back radiation ratio over 5.5 dB, with better performances at higher frequencies in the band. The antenna would be a useful candidate for applications including global navigation satellite systems.;Keywords: Dielectric Resonator Antenna, Hybrid, Slot antenna, Wideband, Circular polarization, Global Navigation Satellite Systems...
