Abstract/Summary:
The usage of data sharing applications has been increasing dramatically. With the use of the Internet there lies a growing concern about information security and surveillance. Moreover, these systems require third-party intervention to authenticate and legitimatize transactions. These third parties collect and control the data, resulting in potential security breaches. It is certain that there is lack of trust among users. Some of these issues can be partially addressed by Blockchain technology.;Blockchain is a peer-to-peer distributed ledger technology containing a continuously growing list of records, called blocks. Data is shared among peers in a way that each peer has an exact same copy of the data that is available on the Blockchain ledger. As the underlying infrastructure of cryptocurrencies in general, and Bitcoin in particular, Blockchain has demonstrated that trust and audit of transactions can be enforced using a decentralized network of peers sharing a public ledger.;We propose a system that uses blockchain technology to implement automated access control of personal data without involving any third-party intervention. Bitcoin only stores currency transactions. Unlike Bitcoin, our system stores and shares a large variety of personal data on secured channels. The proposed system implements a protocol to maintain access control lists as permitted by the owner of the data. Thus, allowing users to own their personal data and control its sharing and access to it. In the future, this system can be applied to other applications in which multiple participants can trust the authenticity and validity of data even though they do not necessarily truest each other.
