Abstract/Summary:
IPTV's customer base is growing at a rapid rate. At the same time high definition television is becoming prevalent resulting in rising customer demand for high quality television over IP network. Packet drops in the IP network is one of the biggest obstacles in providing high quality services to the customers.;Various schemes for packet recovery have been proposed and implemented. Their boundaries are being pushed regularly by rising standards of quality of service. We study three of these recovery techniques a central scheme, a peer-to-peer based scheme and application layer forward error correction scheme. We then implement and evaluate centralized and peer-to-peer schemes in a simulated environment. An existing implementation of application layer recovery is studied and the results are then compared.;It is observed in the results that centralized recovery gives the best packet recovery ratio and end-to-end delay of response packets for a network with low bandwidth and higher loss rates. With higher available bandwidth peer-to-peer scheme is able to achieve higher packet recovery ratio for certain nodes. Application layer forward error correction functions well with higher bandwidth too. An adaptive approach is proposed that tries to take advantage of the strengths of these schemes depending upon the situation.
