Abstract/Summary:
There are several types of malware deployed by hackers to target Android devices that are evolving at a rapid date. The purpose of this study was to research the various methodologies hackers use to deploy malware on Android smartphones and analyze the various tools, techniques, and procedures available to information security professionals to detect malware and protect Android devices. This study also examined methods to prevent the installation of malware on Android devices and new technologies that can identify Android malware.;While this research identified several tools and techniques that are useful for detecting and preventing Android malware, there is a need for these methods to be updated, or new technologies to be developed, as malware continues to advance and enhance their ability to evade common anti-malware methodologies. Consequently, this research discovered that analyzing an Android device's energy consumption is a promising technology for detecting malware on an Android device. Additionally, hybrid analysis appears to be more efficient and successful at detecting Android malware than implementing static or dynamic analysis on an individual basis.;The recommendations of this study assessed methods for keeping up with the rapid rate at which Android malware evolves and addressed some of the limitations of the available analysis tools and techniques. Information security professionals should educate Android users on the practices users should follow to enhance the security of their device. Additionally, information security professionals should continue to develop new methods to detect, prevent, and mitigate the effects of increasingly sophisticated and complex Android malware.
