Abstract/Summary:
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine burnout in collegiate athletes.; Problem. Burnout in college athletes is a relatively new area of study and needs to be looked at more closely. Athletic trainers need to be more informed to help care for or prevent athletes from suffering burnout.; Method. A descriptive type of research was conducted. The instrument used was the Eades Athletic Burnout Inventory and a demographic questionnaire. Subjects were 150 Division II collegiate athletes.; Findings. Significance difference was found between gender. Female athletes had higher burnout scores than male athletes. Significant difference was also found between team and individual sports. Team sports had higher scores than individual sport athletes.; Conclusion. Burnout can be found in the collegiate athlete and can be influenced by different demographics. Burnout needs to be examined more closely and athletic trainers should be more aware of the signs and symptoms to help prevent burnout.
