Citizens of Calgary have the opportunity to be part of solutions that benefit the Bow and Elbow River's watersheds. And The City of Calgary plays a role in offering experiences and opportunities for education and engagement that encourage citizens to participate individually and collectively to ensure the rivers and watersheds remain healthy. This research explores successful education initiatives that work to develop citizen knowledge, skills, understanding, and participation for the watershed. Using a qualitative multi-case study methodology, this research examines watershed education programs of three organizations through document analysis and semi-structured interviews to understand attributes of successful watershed education programs. Twelve attributes were discovered and include, providing opportunities for direct experience, creating connections for citizens with the watershed, developing partnerships, incorporating evaluation, building capacity in the community and developing opportunities for community participation. Results will inform The City of Calgary's strategy for watershed public education and outreach. |
