The economic liberalization that occurred in India in the early 1990s was a catalyst for changing the manner in which women were depicted in India literature. The literary works researched were applied to three indicators, which included employment, social status, social issues, and artifact type. The results identified the similarities and differences based on inclusion of women as primary and/or secondary characters and the literary tone of the artifact, for both pre- and post-1991 timelines. The level of influence in post-economic liberalization artifacts was more positive than in pre-economic liberalization artifacts, while the tone was more negative; the number of primary, female characters increases with the increase in positive-toned artifacts. |
