Abstract/Summary:
The study examined the causes of illegal oil bunkering in Nigeria based on people's perception. It probes into the effects of oil bunkering on national development in Nigeria. The study employed both the quantitative and qualitative research methods through collation of materials from both primary and secondary sources. The study finds among others that the nation has incurred colossal losses in oil revenues, high rate of unemployment, withdrawal of foreign investors and companies, degradation of local environment, increased acquisition of light arms and small weapons and high incidence of school dropouts. The paper recommends the need for government as a matter of urgency to put an end to the immeasurable damage the destructive activities of oil thieves had caused Nigeria. Government should creates employment opportunities, improve social services and equitable distribution of revenue. The federal government should promptly prosecute of crude oil thefts, and other policy measures towards addressing issues of illegal oil bunkering in Nigeria.
