The purpose of this capstone project was to examine how artificial intelligence could be utilized to assist in the development of a more effective method of cyber defense by improving upon current autonomous cyber defense systems. This research was performed to demonstrate the importance of adapting current methods of autonomous cyber defense and the potential impact of artificial intelligence systems in the effectiveness of those adaptations. The research questions presented were designed to identify current improvements made by artificial intelligence systems being developed and their implications for adaptation and use in autonomous cyber defense. Through the literature review process, an in-depth examination of traditional methods of cyber defense was presented, current artificial intelligence applications in cyber defense were reviewed, several ways artificial intelligence could be used to improve current cyber defense methods were examined, and several commercial artificial intelligence systems being developed and utilized were presented. A review of current artificial intelligence implementations in autonomous cyber defense revealed that while extensive research has been conducted in this area, all forms of cyber defense could benefit greatly from increased research and implementation of artificial intelligence technology.
