Abstract/Summary:
Thesis question. Has Kosovo independence had a negative influence on the stability of the region?;Thesis statement. Despite the fact that the independence of Kosovo is still being disputed by Serbia, the stability of the region has been largely unaffected. In Serbia, pro-Western democratic forces have managed to win the first elections after Kosovo proclaimed its independence while at the same time the radical nationalistic option suffered a blow because a split in the Serbian Radical Party. In BiH, Republika Srpska's Prime Minister Milorad Dodik although threatening with a referendum for independence of the RS from Bill has not made such an attempt but continues to undermine the normal functioning of the country and is not directly connected with the events in Kosovo and Serbia. Croatia's security is unlikely to suffer from Kosovo's independence as the country has been invited to join NATO and is the closest to joining the EU of the countries in the region although the country still needs to overcome the problem of corruption and organized crime. In addition, the unresolved status of the Lisbon Treaty may affect the chances of not only Croatia but all the countries in the region about the possible EU accession.
