Abstract/Summary:
In recent years, United States foreign policy has taken an interventionist approach in an attempt to create democratic governments in authoritative or failing states. This approach under the label of democratic peace theory has led to a loss in American lives, money, and credibility. Does "regime change" alone lead to long-term democratic stability, or is there another avenue of policy that would encourage democratic government?;This thesis examines the factors that contribute to the formation and stability of democratic governments through case studies and evaluations. During the course of this discussion the argument is made that economic liberalization is a sufficient condition for the political liberalization of states and, in addition, this form of liberalization is the best course of action in the attempt to establish stable democratic governments. Foreign and economic and economic policy recommendations will be made to support this thesis and challenge misconceptions of globalization and trade.
