Abstract/Summary:
In this study the effects of technology familiarity and familiarity of chunks on recall task performance were examined as a function of being familiar with text, chat, instant messaging, and short message services (SMS) and being familiar with the acronyms commonly used in those settings. Participants were 96 undergraduate students enrolled in introductory psychology classes. It was hypothesized that participants more familiar with text messaging, chatting, SMS, and e-mail services would have more exposure to three- and four-letter acronyms and therefore would be more likely to recall a string of letters containing acronyms common to those services. Participants' performance on instruments measuring technology familiarity and acronym familiarity suggested that the majority of the participants in the current study were not familiar with these technology services. Technology familiarity and acronym familiarity did not have significant effects on the number of letters recalled by participants.
