Abstract/Summary:
It is estimated that by 2030, 70 million people in the United States will be 65 years and older. Hence promotion of healthy community living in order to reduce number of nursing home placements is one of the goals of health care professionals. Guided by the theoretical framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF), the purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of death, continued home-living, and nursing home placement among home-based older adults. Data from 455 home-based older adults who have mild to no cognitive impairment, within one year from the last interview, were used for this secondary analysis. One-way ANOVA with post-hoc tests and binary logistic regression analyses revealed that IADL and ADL were important factors in predicting the three life events. This will assist occupational therapists to evaluate and promote independence in IADL and ADL to achieve healthy community living.
