Abstract/Summary:
Registered nurses operate within an increasingly complex world and must keep current with escalating new information and technology, policy, and ethical issues that affect their work environment and ability to provide quality care to patients. Communities of practice are forums where individuals with similar interests can meet to share experiences, ideas, knowledge, and best practices. NurseONE is an electronic portal administered by the Canadian Nurses Association that provides members with access to a comprehensive range of academic and research material and other learning opportunities. This action research project explored whether NurseONE was an appropriate vehicle for establishing virtual communities of practice for nurses who share common roles, specialties, or domains of practice. The general conclusion was that NurseONE would be an appropriate medium for an electronic community of practice and, based on the research and review of relevant literature, recommendations are provided for supporting this initiative.
