Abstract/Summary:
In this thesis, the flying qualities of an F/A-18 aircraft were obtained for the longitudinal and for the lateral motions of this aircraft in open loop and without considering the flight aircraft control systems. These F/A-18 aircraft flying qualities were calculated for a total of 52 flight cases, characterized by different Mach numbers, altitudes and angles of attack.; The F/A-18 aircraft stability and control derivatives were delivered by the NASA DFRC laboratories for a total of 52 flight cases and the flying qualities of the F/A-18 aircraft were determined from these derivatives. Two methods were used for the flying qualities determination: the approximate method and the exact method. All four eigenvalues of the characteristic system were calculated by the exact method, while the eigenvalues for each mode were calculated by the approximate method.; The natural frequencies and the damping were determined from the characteristic system eigenvalues and the flying qualities were determined from the natural frequencies and from the damping for the longitudinal motion (long period and short period) and for the lateral motion (roll, dutch roll and spiral). The relative errors were calculated for the longitudinal and for the lateral F/A-18 aircraft motion.
