Abstract/Summary:
This historical analysis of literature on media examines the representation of women in print magazines since the 1950s. This historical analysis looks at the major historical events directly affecting women during each decade since then and explores the ways these had an impact on the way women continued to be depicted. This exploration revealed continuing patterns of limiting portrayals of women, as seen in their roles in American society. In addition, the effects of these representations on female society are examined. Specifically the clinical and psychodynamic effects, such as eating disorders and depression, are looked at more in depth. Finally, implications for social work practice are discussed.
