Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between acculturation level and depression among older Korean immigrants. The sample included 51 older Korean immigrants aged 65 or older who attended the New Life Adult Day Health Center in Garden Grove, California. Self-administered questionnaires were used which were all translated in Korean and comprised of an acculturation scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale, and demographic information including age, marital status, and living status.; The results of the study indicated that there was no significant relationship between acculturation level and depression. Women were more likely to be acculturated and depressed than men, and respondents who lived with other family members were more likely to be depressed than those who lived independently. Social workers need to understand Korean older immigrants with their depressive symptoms living in a foreign country.
