Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this project was to develop a program, identify a potential funding source, and write a grant to fund an outreach, education, and assistance program for Spanish speaking Latino adults at risk of or suffering from mental illness. An extensive literature review was conducted to investigate the background of the problem and the solutions that have been attempted in the past.; Latinos in general are one of the least likely groups to seek formal mental health services. This proposed program seeks to demystify the mental health system for the Latino community. It will target various cities of Los Angeles County with a dense Latino population. The potential funding source was the California Endowment which has supported various similar outreach programs to underserved groups of people.; The goal of the project is to improve mental health of low income, Spanish speaking Latino adults over the age of 18 who are at risk of or suffering from mental illness by providing education about mental illness and assistance in obtaining necessary services.
