Abstract/Summary:
This thesis explores the persistence of the fairy tale princess as a contemporary cultural icon. With more than 300 years of ongoing publication and a recent explosion of princess-related media and products, the fairy tale princess icon has a fluid adaptability and longevity that is nearly unrivaled.;The responses to the questionnaire were complicated and often conflicted, pointing out that the fairy tale princess icon is doing the work of both supporting and simultaneously challenging cultural expectations. This research project suggests that evolution is, in fact, the key to the continued existence and success of the fairy tale princess icon.;Data for this thesis were gathered via an online questionnaire on the popular blogging platform, LiveJournal. Twenty open-ended questions were posted for a one-month time period in December 2008-January 2009. The responses to these questions were then assessed and conclusions drawn from the information found.
