| This thesis examines the first season of the popular television series Lost. Using dramatistic analysis, cluster analysis, semiotic analysis, and symbolic interactionism, this thesis uses rhetorical criticism to argue that three binary tensions (faith/science, righteous violence/corrupt violence, and autonomy/interdependence) combine to support the unquestioned myth of fear in America. This thesis examines the myth in relationship with the three binary oppositions, arguing that the state of fear in America has been normalized and naturalized in order to obtain acquiescence of the members of society. The reinforcement of fear through popular media can have dangerous implications for the identity of Americans and the future of the United States. |
