Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation analyzes the theological correlation between the book of Hebrews and its hymns. Chapter one provides an introduction to the topic and discusses significant features of research. The chapter proposes the thesis that there is a distinct connection among the authorial hymns of the epistle within its canonical volume and that the hymns in fact serve as a terse review of the epistle's theology.;Chapter two includes an overview of the prolegomena of the epistle. The historical backdrop provides a proper conceptual orientation to the work's origination. The authorship, recipients, date, and the threefold purpose for writing are considered in view of their historical, grammatical context.;Chapter three examines the exegetical components of both the book and the hymns while incorporating a structural arrangement of the epistle at large. The work of exegesis pays special attention to the theological underpinnings of the book. The findings support a proper theological orientation from which to identify the distinct themes of the epistle and of the hymns respectively.;Like the arrangement of the previous chapter, chapter four initially presents an evaluation of the theology of the book of Hebrews. From the preceding historical and exegetical examinations, four predominant theological concepts that highlight the organization of the volume are suggested and fleshed out through each section. The hymns of Hebrews are subsequently assessed following the same methodology.;Chapter five entails a final analysis of the results of the theological evaluation. It analyzes the continuity and disparity among the theologies that allows for a proper review of the former research. The chapter concludes the dissertation with the affirmation that the hymnic passages do in fact serve as a corollary to the whole of the text. The hymns offer a good starting point for understanding and appreciating the theology of the book of Hebrews.
