Abstract/Summary:
"Anima Urbis" is an exploration of the daily life in the postmodern city, through the critical look of a Spanish filmmaker studying a Master's Degree in Toronto. On the one hand, we see what she captures in her flaneaur-like walks, wandering through the city and its public spaces. On the other hand, we access her daily life in her apartment, where she shows us her creative process and frustrations in editing her film. A distant and observational gaze as a foreigner in the city is combined with a lyrical confessional character recalling her family and homeland in Galicia. The filmmaker appears as the editor and constructor of this travelogue which is born from an overwhelming archive. What makes the protagonist stutter is precisely the vast potential of coverage that video offers in the digital age. So her house is turned into cave and on its walls many shadows are being cast. Thanks to the projector, the computer, and the software's potential, she performs the drama of the contemporary individual in a society of information that offers infinite narratives and possibilities. This ethnographic experimental documentary is the confession of a thirty-year-old woman who approaches everyday-life through the dichotomous struggle between poetry and philosophy, appealing to reason as well as to the senses.
