| This thesis examines the relationship between Herman Melville's Moby Dick and the history of science. In particular it focuses on the similarities in content and method between Moby Dick's more technical passages and natural histories of the Renaissance and modern eras. In the process, the rhetorical and philosophical bases to the humanities, arts, and sciences are explored to understand more fully how the structures of knowledge in these fields have drifted apart over time. |
