Literature circles and comprehension of literary texts in a 2nd grade classroom

Abstract/Summary:
Literature circles were utilized in a second grade literacy classroom to examine the effects on Reading Comprehension. Second grade is where students start to shift their learning abilities from pictorial into textual data. They begin to start answering questions about their readings. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if literature circles were an effective strategy to enhance Reading Comprehension. The students practiced literature circles during literacy period in small groups where they were accountable for the completion of assignments. The study used four data collection methods: Pre- and Post-Test, Likert Scale Survey, Journal Observation Checklist, and a DRA Assessment to assess the students reading comprehension over a period of time. The results revealed that more than half of the students in this study improved their reading comprehension skills.
