| Objectives. Panoramic radiograph (pan) is an extraoral projection that shows an image of the facial structures including the maxilla and mandible and their supporting structures. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of bone and soft tissue lesions on routine panoramic radiographs.; Results. The sample included radiographs from 536 females and 464 males. The mean age was 52 years. A total of 352 lesions (35%) were found. In this study, the majority of the lesions were located in the areas that would be included in the periapical radiographs, except lesions in the maxillary sinus, neck soft tissue, and 3 lesions in the ramus area. Only 2 lesions (one lymphoma and one ameloblastoma) detected in these routine panoramic x-rays needed treatment.; Conclusion. Based on this study, majority of lesions were detectable in pan were seen in periapical x-rays. Therefore, pan should be ordered selectively, following evaluation of the periapical x-rays, and if clinical findings indicate further investigation. |
