Abstract/Summary:
This thesis examines the role of sugars and fats on glycemic responses. We hypothesized that, in the context of normal mixed-meals, blood glucose concentrations would rise and fall more quickly after meals with a higher sugar content in both healthy control and type 1 diabetes (T1DM) subjects, and that adding fat would flatten glycemic responses in control subjects but not those with T1DM. In both Control and T1DM subjects, high sugar meals elicited quicker rises and falls in blood glucose than the starch meals (p<0.05); however, there were no effects on incremental Area under the Curve (iAUC). Fat flattened the glycemic response in "Controls" (p<0.001) and reduced the iAUC (p=0.001) but had no significant effect in T1DM. Further research is needed to examine the role of sugar and fat on hypoglycemia.
