Introduction. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) causes impairment in many daily occupations including driving. For adolescent drivers diagnosed with ADHD this creates a serious safety risk (Barkley, 2004). Purpose and significance. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to determine the best intervention methods to prepare adolescents diagnosed with ADHD to be competent drivers and to determine if there is evidence that supports the driving interventions currently in use. Method. We conducted a systematic literature review on the driving risks and impairments associated with ADHD. Results. After reviewing the literature on effective driving interventions the following four themes emerged: driving simulators, driving strategies for adolescents, occupational therapy and driving, and occupational therapy intervention. Discussion. Within the systematic literature review there were no studies found that provided evidence of one driving intervention being more effective than others. Even though evidence of the effectiveness of driving interventions were not found, each of the driving strategies described have potential to enhance the safety of adolescents diagnosed with ADHD as they begin to drive. Occupational therapists can use these strategies to develop a comprehensive evaluation and intervention program to address the needs of adolescent drivers diagnosed with ADHD and their families. |
