Abstract/Summary:
What is data in conservation? This question summarizes many challenges that modern conservation practices struggle with. These challenges are connected to the fact that data stems from physical traces, which are produced and interpreted differently among institutions and conservation experts from different backgrounds.;My research identifies the ambiguities in how this data are organized and communicated among experts, proposing possible design solutions. This investigation opens new opportunities for information designers in the field of art conservation. This thesis is based on a case study of a conservation project to highlight qualities in chemical analysis supported by qualitative data to enhance information discovery and interpretation.
