Abstract/Summary:
The use of drilled shafts over pile foundations as bridge foundation has become more popular in recent years because it sometimes yields constructive and economical advantages. Nevertheless, it is common knowledge amongst geotechnical and structural engineers that further investigation is required since no standards for considering the soil-structure interaction are readily available when considering drilled shafts. This study describes the seismic behavior of a pile-bent bridge over drilled shafts under the different soil profiles established by AASHTO (1996). Results indicate that the bridge studied, when located in soils corresponding to Soil Profile Type III or softer, would experience collapse of the bridge slabs since the magnitude of the displacements obtained require impractical bearing seat lengths.
