Abstract/Summary:
The current ANSI A14.2 stepladder design verification slip test does not address the fact that the specified vinyl tile is liable to become obsolete while the standard is in effect. The slip test is based on the static coefficient of friction between the ladder feet and the specified vinyl tile. An apparatus and method was designed, fabricated and tested. It measured the static coefficient of friction in a laboratory setting and was found to be precise and accurate using ASTM D 6205 as a guide. Ladder manufacturers can use this apparatus and method to evaluate the friction of ladder feet without having to rely on one specific material to ultimately make ladders better and safer to use.; Keywords.
