Abstract/Summary:
Many aspects of a construction company are influenced by its health and safety performance, such as employee morale, project costs, and productivity. This study focuses on the development of a health and safety maturity model at the organizational level for the New Brunswick construction industry. The maturity model is based on the hypothesis that greater maturity in an organization's practices will result in improved performance. This is tested by collecting data from four NB construction companies and comparing the model's findings to their historical safety performance. Analysis indicates a possible correlation between the performance of the model's questionnaires and the traditional audit methods used by regulatory agencies. The analysis also highlights example areas in need of improvement, such as allowing greater worker participation in planning the health and safety program, which would lead to improved health and safety maturity. Overall, it is concluded that the model demonstrates an ability to measure a company's current practices and will potentially serve as a proactive tool for the management of health and safety with further development. It is proposed that future research efforts attempt to validate the model through statistical analysis of its applicability and effectiveness.
