Abstract/Summary:
Excavations at Chemai, an Iron Age cave and open air homestead site on the southern slopes of Mt. Elgon, produced large quantities of iron, ceramic and faunal remains. Analyses of recovered material revealed that occupation occurred in two phases. The early phase is characterized by pastoral production of cattle and caprines, along with the hunting of wild game. Economic diversification occurred during the late phase, indicated by decreased emphasis on pastoralism and hunting, presence of agricultural ceramics and large quantities of iron slag. Increased population density, competition for resources, cattle raiding and warfare were likely prime motivators for diversification.
