Abstract/Summary:
In this work, quasiracemic crystals of amino acid and amino acid derivatives were isolated and the structures were solved in attempt to systematically predict crystal structures. Combinations of methionine and valine, leucine, isoleucine, and norvaline were isolated and their structures determined as well as valine paired with leucine. Comparisons were made between the quasiracemates and their racemic parents. The quasiracemic structures showed quasi-inversion centers and quasi-mirror planes that increased the understanding of recognition between different compounds. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding was also analyzed to examine its impact on crystal structure. A quasiracemic study of two metal complexes, chloro-(-)-(1,2-cyclohexanediamino-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-t-butyl-saliclidene))-manganese(III) and chloro-(-)-(1,2-cyclohexanediamino-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-t-butyl-saliclidene))-iron(III) was also initiated. Although no quasiracemates were isolated, a novel polymorph of chloro-(1S,2S)-(-)-(1,2-cyclohexanediamino-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-t-butyl-saliclidene))-manganese(III) was isolated and the structure solved. Also, novel structures for chloro-(1R,2R)-(-)-(1,2-cyclohexanediamino-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-t-butyl-saliclidene))-iron(III) and racemic chloro-(-)-(1,2-cyclohexanediamino-N,N'-bis(3,5-di-t-butyl-saliclidene))-manganese(III) were solved.
