Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is in a manuscript-based format and consists of a collection of papers of which I am first author. Together, these papers form a cohesive report of a single program of research.;Although the four aforementioned chapters represent the bulk of my doctoral research, during my last field season (2003-2004), I collected a considerable amount of data that is not part of the thesis, but has been partially analyzed and the results were presented at the Ecological Society of America meeting in Montréal in August 2005. This work also constitutes a manuscript in preparation entitled "Differential habitat use of an assemblage of coral reef-fish recruits and potential predators". I often refer to this work in Chapter 4.;This thesis comprises the following four manuscripts, which have either been published or accepted for publication, or are currently in preparation for publication: Chapter 1: Vallès, H., Kramer, D. L., Hunte, W. (2006) A standard unit for monitoring recruitment of fishes to coral reef rubble. Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology 336 171-183; Chapter 2: Vallès, H., Kramer, D. L., Hunte, W (in press) Temporal and spatial patterns in the recruitment of coral-reef fishes in Barbados, West Indies. Marine Ecology Progress Series; Chapter 3: Vallès, H., Hunte, W., Kramer, D. L. (in preparation) Environmental correlates of temporal patterns of recruitment in an assemblage of coral reef fishes; Chapter 4: Vallès, H., Hunte, W., Kramer, D. L. (in preparation) Differential effect of early post-settlement processes on the abundance of two concurrently settling coral reef fishes.
