At present,China attaches great importance to the establishment and development of the green financial system. The development of green finance is crucial to the transformation of China’s economy.Commercial bank green credit is the most important business in green finance, which can constrain the misconduct of the enterprise and optimize the rational allocation of resources. The green credit business of commercial banks can not only optimize China’s economic structure, but also be one of the important means to achieve sustainable development in China.Compared with the green credit business in China, the green credit business in developed countries is carried out from the bottom to the top.Foreign commercial banks spontaneously carry out green credit business, actively fulfill their social responsibilities and maintain a good society image. However, the green credit business of China’s commercial banks is carried out from top to the bottom, which is driven by the government. And most commercial banks are engaged in business to cater to national policies. This leads us to explore the reasons why Chinese commercial banks do not actively carry out green credit business. In this context, this paper provides a theoretical basis for the development of green credit business of commercial banks in China by studying the heterogeneity impact of different types of commercial banks on green credit business. The author uses the theoretical analysis method firstly to incorporate the green credit and credit risk into the cost-benefit theory function of commercial banks, thus construct the profit theory model under the premise that the commercial bank only has the deposit and loan business, and analyzes the impact of the bank’s green credit business on its credit risk through the profit maximization condition. Then, the author uses the panel data of 16 listed commercial banks from 2008 to 2017 through empirical analysis to test the impact of commercial banks’ green credit business on credit risk.At last, this paper, which divides commercial banks into two categories: large state-owned commercial banks and joint-stock commercial banks, verifies whether commercial banks’ green credit business has a heterogeneous impact on the credit risk of commercial banks through comparative analysis. After researching, this paper finds that commercial banks’ green credit business has a heterogeneous impact on the credit risk of commercial banks.Compared with joint-stock commercial banks, green credit business can reduce the credit risk of large state-owned commercial banks and improve their net profit. The main reason for this is that large state-owned commercial banks have large capital scale and strong anti-risk ability. They have large number of green credit talents who are more professional, and their green credit evaluation systems are more perfect. What’s more, government policy provides more support.Secondly, the large state-owned commercial banks have a stronger sense of social responsibility, which are able to more actively respond to the country’s green credit business. Therefore,China should appropriately consider different types of banks to formulate appropriate policies and incentives to mobilize the enthusiasm of various commercial banks to carry out green credit business during promoting green credit business.Large state-owned commercial banks should actively carry out green credit business and set a benchmark for the entire industry. And joint-stock commercial banks should continuously improve their business level and actively carry out green credit business and control business risks.
