Abstract/Summary:
The emergence and popularity of mobile Internet has brought about a nearly subversive change in the production and lifestyle of people in the era of desktop Internet, and has also profoundly affected people’s thinking and behavior habits. In this context, the field of payment has undergone great changes, and the most important cash payment in daily consumption is gradually replaced by mobile payment.Mobile payment is a new payment method, which relies on the mobile Internet and intelligent mobile terminal devices to meet people’s current mobile payment needs. With the wide application of mobile payment, the consumption habits of the public has been affected. With the mobile payment method, people can complete the payment anytime and anywhere without cash,so it is increasingly difficult to resist the desire of consumption, resulting in higher consumption frequency and larger consumption scale.Mobile payment is being promoted in more and more online and offline consumption scenarios, which may change some important consumer behavior decisions of its users.People at shopping are often faced with the following choice: you see a piece of clothing in the mall, buy immediately to wear it or wait for the season discount to buy at a low price?Similar to the above situation, people need to weigh and choose the value of present and future two different time points, such decision-making behavior is defined as intertemporal choices.Intertemporal consumption choices is an important and common type of decision making in people’s routine life. The changes in the payment field bring new possibilities for this decision-making behavior and thus become the focus of enterprise practitioners. In view of the profound impact of the change of payment mode on people’s consumption behavior,it is extremely necessary to explore the changes brought by mobile payment mode to consumers’ intertemporal choices. The academic field has also paid great attention to mobile payment and intertemporal choices. Most of the existing research in the field of mobile payment focuses on the technical, legal and users’ willingness to use.A large number of literature to the development of mobile payment technology and the improvement of the relevant laws and regulations on the discussion, the other for mobile payment users the discussion is focused on the first use of the influence factors of wills and continuous use, only few studies to examine from the perspective of payment, mobile payment on its users’ consumption behavior. At present, some scholars have usedempirical methods to verify that compared with the traditional cash payment method, mobile payment will increase people’s purchase amount. However, there is still a lack of discussion on the impact of mobile payment on consumers’ decision-making behavior and its mechanism. In the field of intertemporal choices, scholars focus on its influencing factors and model construction. The research on the influencing factors in the previous literature can be classified into three categories.First, the decision-maker’s own factors, including intelligence, emotion, etc.Second, the framework of decision expression, such as the valence of options, the delay time between near and far options, etc.Third, the objective environmental factors of decision-making,such as financial crisis and inflation. In addition, most of the relevant researches take the intertemporal money choices in the form of income as the task context to study the influencing factors of people’s intertemporal choices preference.Based on the mental accounting theory, this study discusses the effect of mobile payment on consumers’ intertemporal choices and its influencing mechanism.Considering that before the emergence of mobile payment, cash payment was most commonly used in daily consumption activities, and cash payment was mostly used for research in previous literatures, this paper compared the emerging mobile payment methods with cash payment methods to analyze the different impacts of mobile payment on consumers’ intertemporal choices. This paper collected questionnaire data through four experiments and analyzed the experimental data to verify the hypothesis. The analysis results show that: firstly, compared with the subjects using traditional cash payment method, the subjects using mobile payment method are more inclined to short-term but small immediate options in the intertemporal decision task;Accordingly, subjects with cash payment preferred the long-term but large future option. In addition,self-control plays an intermediary role between mobile payment and intertemporal choices of consumption. When using mobile payment, consumers control themselves at a lower level, which leads to consumers’ preference for immediate benefits.Verified by the experimental data also mental budget in payment for decision, the moderating effects of intertemporal: when the participants are in a state of mental sufficient budget, cash payment and mobile payment subjects for the recent option preference, and two kinds of payment of intertemporal choices preferences impact did not differ significantly.Only when subjects were in the state of mental budget depletion, consumers using cash payment would further self-restrain and choose the long-term option, while consumers using mobile payment would not give up the short-term option because of this, and would even obviously prefer theshort-term option due to the "what-the-hell effect".
