The importance of innovation has attracted the attention from the decision makers as well as academic researchers.Premier Li Keqiang pointed out in his Report on the Work of the Government in March 2019 that the government will continue to pursue innovation-driven development and foster new growth drivers and the government will increase its ability to provide scientific and technological support. As a gathering area with high level of economic development and with fulfilled vitality and innovation capability, the development of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Delta is of great significance to the Yangtze River Economic Zone and even the whole country. In recent years, the improvement of innovation ability has become the extensive attention and hotspot research among the researchers. It has been pointed out that the agglomeration of innovation in geographical space is related to the spillover effect of innovation. In addition,by teasing up innovation spillovers literatures at home and abroad,it is found that there are relatively few studies on ubran agglomeration, especially on the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration after adjusting its spatial scope. Therefore, this thesis takes the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration as the research object to study the spatial spillover effect of innovation, hoping to provide empirical basis for formulating policies and suggestions to improve the innovation capability in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration. In order to achieve the above goals, this paper first sorts out and summarizes the relevant literature, relevant theories and spillover mechanism related to the urban innovation spillover and Yangtze River Delta innovation.Secondly, based on the innovation input and output data of 26 cities in the Yangtze River Delta from 2006 to 2017,the characteristics and development trend of innovation are clarified. Finally, the spatial autocorrelation test is used to analyze the spatial relationship of innovation activities and the spatial econometric model is established on this basis to empirically analyze the spatial spillover effect of innovation, and then the robustness test and expansion effect decomposition are carried out based on the two spatial weight matrices. The main conclusions drawn from this thesis are as follows:(1)The innovation input and output value of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration show an increasing trend from 2006 to 2017 and account for the absolute proportion of the whole country. For example, the average proportion of patent applications reached 31.5% of that of the whole country.(2)The spatial autocorrelation test confirms that the innovation activities of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration have significant spatial correlation.Specifically, when judging from Moran's I index trend chart,we could find that the spatial correlation of innovation activities in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration is in three stages: increasing to decreasing to increasing shocks. While judging from Moran's I scatter plot, innovation is path-dependent.Innovation in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration has formed a spatial pattern of high concentration represented by Shanghai,Suzhou and Nantong, and low concentration represented by Xuancheng,Zhenjiang,Yangzhou,Ma'anshan,Anqing,Tongling and Chizhou.(3)Based on the fact that the spatial correlation coefficient is 0.2275 and the conclusion drawn from the significance test shows that the innovation of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration has obvious spatial spillover effect.Under the condition of the other factors being unchanged, the patent application volume in this region increases by 1%,which could promote the patent output in its neighboring regions to increase by 0.2275%.Then the robustness test is carried out based on different weight matrices, and the estimation result of the adjacent weight matrix model is obtained to be robust.(4)Among the selected affecting factors, science and technology investment and foreign investment have significant promoting effects on the innovation output of local and neighboring regions. For example, each 1% more investment are made in science and technology investment as well as foreign investment can significantly promote the innovation output of neighboring cities to increase by 0.6147% and 0.3146% respectively. The spillover effects of scientific and technological personnel, economic development level and industrial agglomeration are not obvious. Finally, combining with empirical results and starting from the reality of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, five suggestions are put forward in this thesis respectively:(1)Making full use of the advantages of geographical proximity to play an innovative spillover effect;(2)Increasing government financial investment in science and technology and giving full play to the guiding role of financial funds;(3)Training high-quality talents and promoting the flow of talents;(4)Strengthening policy guidance and promoting industrial agglomeration;(5)Actively introducing foreign investment and absorbing foreign advanced knowledge.
