Research On The Influence Of Technological Diversification On Ambidextrous Innovation Of Enterprises

In the competitive environment that is rapidly changing and highly uncertain of science and technology,enterprises which want to achieve sustainable development based on the capability of persistent innovation will need to invest in multiple areas of technology and obtain technological advantages,so as to be able to carry out different types and directions of technological innovation to respond to the threats posed by technological changes in the industry.In order to achieve persistent innovation,companies often need to convert and connect duly between exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation.They must pay attention to the investment in innovation of new technological fields(exploratory innovation),and also focus on how to achieve the extension of innovative capability and the maximization of innovative benefits in the current technology fields(exploitative innovation).For the purpose of realizing ambidextrous innovation,it has challenged the scope and depth of the company's technological bases.Theory and practice show that compared with enterprises that have the single technological capabilities,enterprises with diversified technical knowledge have more advantages in achieving strategic flexibility and knowledge integration etc.,and can better achieve the coordinated and dynamic development of ambidextrous innovation,and carry out persistent innovation.In recent years,the impact of technological diversification on innovation and development of enterprises has attracted the attentions of both Chinese and foreign scholars.However,most scholars only analyzed the effects of technological diversification on the overall innovative performance,and their researches are lack of the influential mechanism of different types of technological diversification on ambidextrous innovation.And the past researches about the antecedents of enterprises' ambidextrous innovation mainly focused on non-technical factors such as organizational strategy,structure,and top management team etc.,which is short of the analyses on their relationship from the perspective of technological foundation and the researches on the dynamic change of the relationship between them.Based on the review of previous researches,this paper theoretically analyzes the effects of different types of technological diversification on enterprise's ambidextrous innovation(exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation),and tries to construct a theoretical model that includes mediation effects and moderating effect in order to try to provide a new idea for clarifying the relationship between technological diversification and ambidextrous innovation.The questions of research mainly include:(1)the effect of technological diversification(internal and external)on the exploratory and exploitative innovation of enterprises;(2)If strategic flexibility and knowledge integration have mediate effects on the process of technological diversification(internal and external)on ambidextrous innovation(exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation)of firms;(3)Whether technological opportunities in the industry affect the strengthening or weakening of the relationship between technological diversification and ambidextrous innovation of enterprises,that is,the moderating effect of industrial technological opportunities on the relationship between them.Based on the theoretical analyses of the above issues,this paper uses a method of large-scale questionnaire to obtain Chinese companies as the sample data,and applies the structural equation model and multiple regression to conduct empirical researches on the theoretical hypotheses proposed.The following conclusions of the researches are finally drawn:(1)The internal and external technological diversification have significant roles in promoting exploratory innovation,exploitative innovation and ambidextrous innovation;(2)Strategic flexibility and knowledge integration both play partial mediating roles in the three relationships of "technological diversification-exploratory innovation","technological diversification-exploitative innovation"and"technological diversification-ambidextrous innovation";(3)The technological opportunities in the industry have positive moderating role in the two relationships of "technological diversification-exploratory innovation","technological diversity-ambidextrous innovation";but it does not have a significant moderating effect between technological diversification and exploitative innovation.This article takes the scope of technical bases required for enterprises to achieve ambidextrous innovation as the starting point,and systematically analyzes the different impact of technological diversification on the enterprise's exploratory or exploitative innovations.It further clarifies the relationship between them,and is also useful complement to the related researches about strategic flexibility and knowledge integration etc..Moreover,based on the results of empirical research about Chinese companies,it provides useful practical enlightenment for the strategic decision of technological diversification oriented to the ambidextrous innovation of enterprises.
